This Week In Entertainment (7/14/08)

This Week's Pick of the Week is The Dark Knight, something I've anticipated since the Batman Begins. Let's start milking the death of that guy!

I guess we could take a look at what else is opening in theaters this week. We have an animated movie called Space Chimps. It's...I'm sure it's self-explanatory at this poin.

On DVD this week is the latest championship for Boston in some useless league. The city still lost the one that mattered.

Here are a couple of sets of television commercials. I hope these sets don't recycle old public domain stuff because I think these sets are neat. You can judge the era somewhat by watching the commercials made at the time.

Sunday, Lazy Sunday

I've talked about this before, but I just watched part of a video gaming marathon. Instead of college students killing themselves to beat a bunch of games in a series, they're doing that while raising money for a charity. It seems far less pathetic this way. I watched a Mega Man marathon, and I had fun ragging on the awful Mega Man X6. I only wished I stayed for the earlier games.

There's plans for more marathons here. I find this an exciting idea and I would love to do one myself. Sadly I don't have enough friends. Or computer equipment. Or the personality to keep people entertained. Or video game skill,if I must be honest. Too bad, because an EarthBound marathon with my friends would rock. For charity!

I watched the first episode of Incognito Cinema Warrior XP this week. I was hoping to do a full review but I don't think I can. In short, it's a fan made version of MST3k only the Mike is a Resident Evil based character who is a loan survivor of a zombie holocaust. He ducks into a weird movie theater and meets two robots. Their creator is hiding somewhere in the theater and is really wacky. The Dr. decides to rip of f Dr. Forrester by sending bad movies to the our trio. They can either avoid the movie and die by zombies or riff on it like anybody would.

The pilot movie is Bride of the Gorilla, which I would describe but not much happens. Raymond Burr looks bored the whole movie. He causes the death of some guy by punching him and letting a snake bite his victim. A gypsy or something curses him, and he.... never turns into a gorilla. But he does marry the widow. Seriously, there's very little gorilla in this movie.

The good thing about the show is that besides the movie, they riff on a trailer and a old theater commercial. If they ever brought back MST3k, I'd love to see them riff on stuff like that. They wouldn't have to worry about time constraints if they did it online. I also like how they introduced the premise of the show during the first couple host segments. It reminds me of what the premise of MST3k would be like if it was explained on the air. (Maybe it was, but the first few KTMAs are still lost.)

The bad is the host segments humor-wise, which have canned laughter for some reason. Also, two of the trio don't have distinguishable voices, which is important, and they riff too fast. I know I complained about the riffing being too slow on CT, but those guys are pros. I expect them to be even funnier. I have not had the opportunity to get comfortable with these new guys and it hurts them. I was surprised that they got a few zingers off early in the movie, especially during the trailer, but they don't quite have the timing down yet. Also, it was hard to follow the movie with them riffing so often.

So, an interesting first effort. Hopefully with their next episode they'll fix their problems so their online show could be passable for a fan project.

Music Video #43 (Day 13 of 2008)

Today's Music Video is Aeroplane. It is by the Red Hot Chili Peppers and is over four minutes long.

Hmm. Yesterday the word I would have described the video with is steamy. This video seems to be more of a video for 12 year old boys. This is also what I think of when I think of music videos that I don't watch. It never stays still for more than 5 seconds.

The video opens with women wearing tight gold outfits. They slowly move their bodies around until suddenly the video explodes. It's the Red Hot Chili Peppers and they're wearing pants today. In the background some silver costumed ladies are on swings. They kick high a couple times. RHCP sings about how music is their aeroplane, which means...something. There's a pool, which is cool.

They start singing about how they like pleasure spiked with pain. Either this is a song about taking the good with the bad, or it's one of THOSE kind of things. There are a ton of women now and they're holding paddles. They do things like chew bubble gum and spank themselves. 12 year olds LUV'D this video. Just as I typed that two women move their bodies in ways that would have a stern mom yelling at them to keep their knees together like a proper lady!

Singer sings about how he can't find the right gal. Well, maybe you're intimidating her with all this excess. Some gals wearing bathing suits jump into the pool. Seriously, I think I've beaten the 12 year old boy joke to death by now. Singer can make the past disappear. Good for him.

As the refrain is sung, we see more women doing things with paddles. It's like the sexiest airplane commercial. Is this the way to run an airport? YOU BET IT IS! Various stuff happen. As verse two starts, we get a close up of a gold woman's waist. The song becomes harder to understand as the singer sings about overcoming gravity. There's something emo-y but it's lost on me.

Various more stuff happen which includes synchronized swimming stunts. The gold women get in a circle and move their legs around and the swimmers stay in a circle. Final verse is about how a note from some woman could change his life for good or bad. The best visual is of some woman holding onto a rope and spinning towards the pool. Pools are cool. The song concludes with kids in plane costumes singing along with the refrain.

This is how I see music videos. The rockers are doing stuff like this while I watch uncomprehending. And I really don't, either. What do they mean by music is my aeroplane? I guess it makes them feel like they can soar, or something. Too bad it isn't helping with the singer's lady problems. (If you ignore all the women in this video, of course. It hurts his case.) Ladies and gentleman, I'm clueless.

The song is ok. Could use less cussing.

The awesome thing about this video is the excess of the video. Not just women in gold costumes, and not just women in in bathing suits, but both, and more. It's ridiculous, and entertaining on this late Sunday night. This may not be my best entry this month.

Music Video #42 (Day 12 of 2008)

Today's video is called Henry Lee and is sung by Nick Cave and the returning PJ Harvey. It's four minutes of something.

Hmm, there's not much going on in the video so I don't have much to go on.

We start with PJ and Nick Cave sitting next to each other. The video is minimalistic with only a dark background with green lighting and a bench. PJ Harvey looks a little different with her hair down and without the red lipstick. She also looks really really pale, but so does Nick so it must be the way they lighted the set.

PJ starts us off by singing about the title character. PJ and Nick do that thing where you can tell a couple really wants each other but they hold back and barely kiss. PJ sings is a girl who likes Henry Lee and thinks she's better than any other girl, so they should sleep together. Wow, right off the bat. This video is kinda steamy. Just look at her her hair. You get the feeling that the couple could give in at any moment.

Nick, as Henry Lee, sings back while almost kissing her. He tells her that he has another girl so he can't. PJ looks very hurt and I have to say, it does seem unfair for him to sing about not wanting her while simultaneously flirting. Meanwhile I'm looking at Nick Cave's forehead and wondering what it reminds me of. I think it's one of the agent bad guys from the Matrix movies.

Nick goes on about how the girl wanted at least one or two more kisses. But a ha! She really wanted to stab Henry Lee. Meanwhile, PJ is standing behind Nick giving him a back rub. Don't trust her! You got to be careful about women at all times!

PJ takes the next verse. Now that Henry Lee has met a fury that hell can't match, he's a corpse. While PJ rubs Nick's hands against her face, she sings about how the girl threw the corpse down a well. This kind of undercuts the sexiness of the video, song. I'm just saying.

PJ sings about how Henry Lee can rot as his girl will wait forever. Now it's become a song for stalkers. PJ and Nick start to dance. This is cute, but I think we're done with foreplay, so it's time to move on. The song ends with the couple kissing. Finally.

These two look great together. You can really believe they were a couple and they probably were. The song seems to contradict the video but is nice if you ignore the lyrics.

The awesome thing is that the girl made a mistake in deposing of her pen knife. It was found and an investigation eventually revealed Henry Lee's decaying body a few days later. Crime didn't pay, and this woman went to jail for a long time. So I heard.

Robot Master Saturday #1

I've got space to fill and drawings from my childhood. Let's waste a post and some photobucket bandwith!

I loved the Mega Man series. Sometime around the release of the third game I got the Nintendo Power magazine that covered the game. For some reason I decided to draw a picture of all the villians in the first three games. I have no art skills, so I just tried to copy the pictures provided in the magazine or the instruction manuals that I had. I think I may have drawn the bosses from Mega Man 1 before I got the game.

Mega Man 9 will be released for the Wii in September. I'm going to post one picture a week and see how well the picture holds up. (I.E., I'll make fun of my bad drawing. Feel free to join in.) Let's take a look of our first boss, who is labeled #3 in the official ordering.

Cut Man had scissors on his head which he used as a boomerang. And that's it, besides his constant hopping. On the bottom of this picture I added the order which I like to fight the robots and the weapon to defeat them with.

As for the drawing, yikes. It looks like I gave him a pretty ribbon on his misshaped body. His left arm is in a cast and his left leg has turned two-dimensional.
(Yeah, I know, but it looks like he's a robot with one regular leg and one flattened leg.) The funny part is that I think I started with the Mega Man 2 robots, so the drawings are sure to get worse than this. I can't wait.

If you want to poke fun, feel free to post your snark as a reply. Here's the original sprite for comparison.

Music Video #41 (Day 11 of 2008)

My music video thing is becoming popular enough to invite celebrities. Stay tuned. You'll never know when the next cameo will be. Today's video marks the return of CAKE and the song is Never There. Have a bite for the next three minutes.

That was a quick video. This shouldn't take too long.

We start with a disconnected public phone in front of the paneling that was in my room when I grew up. Our singer, who has a cowboy hat, talks about his need to put his arms around his girlfriend. The song starts properly as we now go to a bar where it looks like country music plays. It doesn't, but for some reason I hear the guitars and it feels like a slower version of Beat It. Singer repeats himself and then adds that when he needs his girlfriend, she's never there. So, dump her. Even I can see this. The cowboys playing in the background snitches on singer while he's on the phone. This embarrassment is for his own good.

Singer goes on as we see a big transportation truck ride. Cowboy goes on about how he calls long distance and despite the dozens of minutes that this has inconvienced him, she dismisses him because she's too busy. In reality he's a lose...I mean, she's at a pool in a bikini as muscular men look over her. One of them gives her a foot massage while the rest sorta stand around while one plays a guitar. Cowboy is sorta catching on that she doesn't care about him. I bet he's thinking "But look at my horse belt buckle! How could this happen! And look, I'm a trucker. Isn't that enough?" Cowboys join in with trumpets during the break.

Cowboy starts talking about his failed relationship again. He says that it was just a game to her. HE CAN BE TAUGHT! He hires an investigator, which is sad. This is creepy and stalkery and you don't need this, not even for "closure." Move on. We see his girlfriend straddling her new boyfriend a few times in a motel room. Lucky new guy. This video hasn't explain why the boyfriend is so hurt, so can I assume that it's this and not something more romantic and tragic? We alternate between scenes of cowboy in a motel room watching a descrambled channel that isn't naughty and the girlfriend hopping on her guy a few times.

Investigator gives the pictures of the event to cowboy. Cowboy looks at the more tasteful photos, which again makes him creepy. The video ends with the trumpet player driving up the big rig truck and magically hopping aboard.

The song is catchy. Too bad it doesn't explain why he cared about this girl so much. If the intention of this song was to make him seem likable, than it's less enjoyable. The guy is a creep and should move on asap.

The awesome thing is the bikini. But since that doesn't sound good, the second awesome thing is the All Windmill Channel. It's a favorite among people who have illegal descrambling cable boxes.
