Rimmi's Cartoon Challenge #3

Today's cartoon is The Ultimate Book of Spells. It's another school theme show but at least it rips off Harry Potter, which means its far more interesting than the usual school-themed show.

I'm not saying it's a good rip off. It seems to be Canadian, so how good can it possibly be? They were too lazy to write lyrics for their intro.

This show seems to star three students. We have two boys and a girl. Before you accuse the writers of being too lazy, meet the show's big gimmick. The girl has a flying scooter. Did Hermione have a flying scooter? Suck on that, nerds!

The girl seems to be the star. She gets the gimmick and the most screen time. The boys seem to be the same, except for one has red hair while the other is blond, and the blond is slightly taller and has poiny ears. He's probably from a race of poiny ears, because we need to learn a lessons in our cartoons like how people are different thanks to dumb government regulations.

The book of spell appears to be a narrator type character that can jump into the show to interact with the characters. Hey kiddies, it'll probably say, here's today's adventure! It probably also hands out a few deus ex machina since it's the last book of spells. It would be lame otherwise.

Since it's a show for kids, and a quickie-made derivative at that, it lacks the darkness of the Harry Potter novels. Volde-Ming the obvious bad guy is shown to be crushed by some vehicle, which makes him look silly. He has some dragon sidekicks which he probably yells at and calls hosers or something. Haw! Finally I get to an obvious Canadian stereotype! Bacon! Hockey!

Our trio have adventures while going to a school that has even less students than Gravedale High. The blond gets attacked by a bird creature. The red head, the obvious dufus character, tries to make himself disappear, but he makes only his non-underwear disappear. They all get attacked by a pink, veiny worm.

Oh crap, I didn't just make that up.

Photobucket JAPAN!!!!!!!!!

Oops, sorry. Force of habit.

Photobucket CANADA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The cast is rounded out by some stern looking teacher and some evil twins. The twins are the obvious non-Voldemort antagonist and rivals for the trio. They're not the same sex and that's all that the intro shows. As for the teacher, there's a short part where I thought the blond and the girl transformed into her. That was weird until I rewatched it.

The magic on the show seems to have less rules than HP does. The girl controls lightning at random, which is something you wouldn't see in the HP series. Hermione knew everything, but you never saw her control the weather. I'm sure the writers felt that it was magic and a cartoon, so they didn't have to establish any rules. It's not like these shows last for long.

Looking at the wiki entry, our kids our Cassie, Gus, and Verne. I think Verne is the Harry Potter type who just learned of his wizard past, but I still think Cassie is the star. Unless the producers or writers or whoever just thought she would be the most popular character. It was produced in 2001, which means that at least they could not be blamed for stealing everything from the series.

Zarlick the villian is trapped in the center of the planet. For some reason the Ultimate Book sends the kids there. Why? Shut up, that's why. They had 26 episodes and they needed to fill the fifteen minutes a week somehow. The UBOS is Cassie's grandfather or something, again leading to my theory that she's the star or the most popular character.

This looks like a fun show that I would like to see once just to mock. Rimmi has described a few episodes to us so we have mocked it unseen. This series is far more likely to be on youtube so I might be able to do that in the future.

I still say Borgia is either a girl or a boy who is completely conflicted about his orientation. I'm sorry but the haircut, the clothes and the name tell me she is a girl. Not a boy and nothing in the how introduces Borgia as a boy. I've seen 6 episodes and in none of them is Borgia referred to as a "him."
