Music Video #4

Today's video is by a band I've heard of but not really listened to. This is Cake's "I Will Survive", which is presumbably about a woman surviving a bad relationship. It lasts 4 and half minutes and can be found at this url:

Oh. I just watched it and my litle joke is on me. This is Cake's version of the classic disco song, only un-disco'd.

Anyway the video seems to be about a cop with a beard, but he's just a meter maid...man, whatever, and he sings about some previous relationship while ignoring bank robberies. He eventually gives a ticket to a woman, presumbably the person he's singing about. A wedding takes place for some reason.

On second watch, it seems to be that the bride is the person he has the beef with. Also, the video is constantly showing crystal animals as a car ornament. There were lions and octopi.

The video seems to take place all over some big city. A very quiet one, though. It's like they had to get Cake's drummer and guitarist just to liven up a dead city.

When he gives the ticket to quite-possibly-his-ex-girlfriend, he totally makes her talk to his hand.

I'm not sure I get what the video is about. It's clear that the meter guy is sad and all, but why a meter guy? It could have been anything. Except for the crystal animals, the video seems like a missed opportunity. The song is a good version of the disco song, although I thought it was funny how he had to slow down and speak it at times.

The awesome part was at the end when they showed a crystal sword fish. Try to top that, crystal octopus!

Actually the awesome part was when the store gets robbed and our hero the meter maid is powerless to help or even care. Also when he tickets the bridal car.

By the way, the storyline in a music video doesn't *have* to mirror the storyline in the songs. The women John McCrea is ticketing are not necessarily women who spurned him. Sometimes it's just cool to show a day in the life of a meter maid.

You're right. The video could have been about anything. In this case, it was about a meter maid.

Tomorrow's video:

No specific awesome thing for this video. I just really like the song.
